Shanghai: The Disappointments of Decadence
I completed an MA in photojournalism in the summer of 2008 with the publication of this photobook. It's divided between images of iconic Shanghai captured while writing a city guidebook—soaring skyscrapers, haute cuisine, 1930s glamour—and snapshots of the lonely, isolating city I experienced. China Daily's Hot Pot
The China Daily, China's only national English language newspaper, runs a thrice-weekly column where guest writers share anecdotes and observations on life in the world's most populous (and occasionally infuriating) nation. I wrote for the section through the first half of 2007. Here are three published rants. Read More

Soul Rythyms
On the 13th morning after Tibetan New Year, Xiahe is a town transformed. Horns echo around the valley, Tibetan karaoke booms from street-side speakers and the path to the spectacular lamasery becomes a catwalk, filled with a dazzling array of costumes. Eastern Piste
In China, socialism comes with 'Chinese characteristics' and one of the more surprising quirks of 21st Century communism is the People's growing love of skiing. Yabuli, in China's frigid north eastern corner, has been tempting first-timers onto the slopes for 25 years and is established as the finest resort this side of Mongolia. This story, published in the South China Morning Post, details the pleasures and absurdities of life on the Eastern piste. Read More

24 Hours in Zhaoqing
Cradled by the Xijiang River to the south, sheltered by mountains
to the north, and boasting a crag-studded lake at its centre, Zhaoqing is arguably China's most scenic urban environment. It's chief rivals, Hangzhou and Guilin, traded their tranquility for busloads of tourists a long while ago. Zhaoqing, meanwhile, remains as languid as a tropical summer breeze. Published in That's Shanghai magazine in October 2006. Read More
